Thermoelectric Power Plants

This is the largest power plant in Panama. It is composed of two independent plants (combined cycle and coal) with seven generation units, for a total capacity of 280 MW.

  • The coal plant has a boiler and 3 steam turbines totaling 120 MW.
  • The combined cycle plant has 3 diesel-operated gas turbines coupled to a heat recovery boiler that uses the combustion gases from the turbines to generate steam and power a turbine. This plant has a capacity of 160 MW.

The Cativá Thermoelectric Power Plant was developed as an emergency project to increase the capacity of electric power generation in the very short term, in order to cover the growing energy demand in Panama. Located in Bahía Las Minas (Colón), it has an installed capacity of 87MW and employs 10 internal combustion engines.

The Meriléctrica plant is located in Barrancabermeja (Santander) and began commercial operation in February 1998. It is composed of a simple cycle gas run thermal unit with a capacity of 167 MW and is part of the group of generators which agreed to the reliability charge under the scheme of energy regulation in the country.
